Holborn Property

Like so much of London, up until the Middle Ages the land that is now occupied by Holborn was rolling fields. The area was named after the Holebourne, which was a tributary of the River Fleet (itself a tributary of the River Thames). The Holborn Bar was the tollgate on the west side of the City of London, and a small hamlet grew up around this. The Inns of Court appeared around this time too, and so started Holborn's legal tradition.

Hatton Garden appeared in the 16th century after Queen Elizabeth ordered the Bishop of Ely to rent some of the land occupied by Ely Palace to Sir Christopher Hatton. This has been home to a number of interesting characters over the years, including Hiram Maxim who invented the machine gun. It is now the centre of London's jewellery and diamond trade.

The population of Holborn swelled in the 19th century, and as a result slums began to appear, often fuelled by gin consumption thanks to the nearby Gordon's distillery. Holborn later suffered at the hands of the Luftwaffe, but most of the Inns of Court survived, and plenty of other important buildings were also lucky. Today the area is dominated to some extent by the legal profession and big business, but there's plenty else to keep the visitor occupied.
